Dermot Lavin’s 31-year career in education spans two jurisdictions and diverse educational contexts. The earlier part of his career was spent in the UK gaining senior leadership experience in a variety of challenging UK comprehensive settings. In 2009 Dermot returned to Ireland and currently works as a serving Principal. In 2025, Dermot qualified as a mediator and is actively using these skills in a volunteer capacity to support his local community.
Dermot’s core leadership philosophy centres on people and relationships, dignity, and potential. His daily challenge to his students, “bringing the best version of yourself to school each day”, encapsulates an ethos of respect, high expectations, and individualised commitment. He champions the importance of well-being and confidence as foundations for academic achievement within an inclusive school community that is respectful of diversity and dignity.
Dermot’s principalship exemplifies transformative educational leadership. He continues to steer his current school with strategic vision and effective operational efficiency while working to secure a brand-new school building to replace his current school, with construction expected imminently. The securing of this educational investment positions the school for a vibrant future, ensuring generations of students benefit from world-class facilities and expanded opportunity.
Dermot remains invested in his role as mediator looking forward to extending these skills into the future.
